Sumi Limbu, making her first Japanese Stab bound book, with guidance of Prof. Gaby Hernández (June 2023)
Sumi learns Japanese Stab binding with Prof. Gaby Hernández. During her fellowship working at the School of Art Design Clinic, she made made paper.
During Summer 2023, Sumi Limbu, a Nepalese student in our Master of Design Program, took on intensive design research as the first Story & Material Fellow—a hands-on opportunity to visually explore history, culture, and materiality, through mentoring and self-initiated projects. She has dedicated her time to discover and reinterpret symbology, iconography, color, and pattern from her Nepalese tribe ancestry. By the end of Summer, she plans to write proposals for a conference and an article, and to exhibit her visual work at our School of Art Design Clinic, a multi-use space Story & Material develops its activities.

More on Sumi's work coming soon!
